POW MARTINEZ

advanced human- ARTIST in RESIDENCY

May 14th-June 11th, 2016

OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, may 14TH, 6:00 TO 9:00 PM (performance at 8:30pm)

Random Parts is pleased to announce a solo exhibition and an artist residency with the Manila based multi -disciplinary artist, Pow Martinez. His exhibition, Advanced Human, opens May 14th, 2016  from 6 to 9pm with a performance starting at 8:30pm. The exhibition runs through June 11th, 2016.

Martinez creates expressionistic paintings as well as multi-media sound installations. Teetering on the grotesque, his crude, painterly works offer an eclectic and humorous take on Filipino history, the art market, and Pinoy pop culture. He often paints figures in a fetishistically naïve style that explore primitive mythologies and “man’s inhumanity to man”.  Inspired by such artists as Jonathan Meese, David Shrigley, George Condo, and Dash Snow, his practice makes satirical comments in a hard-hitting and overtly humorous way.

Stemming from traditions of the avant-garde, his music and sound installations reflect the same obsession with the “outrageous”. His experimental, electronic music project, Sewage Worker,  uses cacophony, dissonance, atonality, noise, indeterminacy and repetition.

Pow Martinez studied Visual Communication at the University of the Philippines and Painting at the Kalayaan College. He holds degrees in Painting and Visual Communication. In 2010 he was one of the recipient of the prestigious Ataneo Art Award, given to the most promising new artist in the Philippines.

Martinez’ works has been exhibited in the Philippines and internationally (in Germany, France, Thailand, Japan, United States and others). He has participated in all of the “Bastards Of Misrepresentation” exhibitions, curated by Manuel Ocampo, that focus on the underbelly of contemporary Filipino art and culture. Advanced Human is his first solo exhibition in the San Francisco Bay Area and the United States.
